Shaker Style Contemporary Home

outside of the barn style home

Inspired by an 8 sided shaker style barn form that the existing structure had prior to its complete loss due to a major fire, the clients were interested in shaking things up a bit while still being respectful of the home that they had just lost.

Although we started with the shaker barn as the unifying form, off which the other wings of the house branched out, we pushed and pulled the exterior walls and the internal Douglas fir structural framing system to abstract the simple, very organized shaker barn. What resulted was a thought out and interesting composition within an open floor plan, using careful column placement to hint at internal rooms and dictate circulation within the larger space. We were able to bring natural daylight into the heart of the structure by introducing a central clerestory window monitor which both connected floors with natural light and visibility and acted as the central anchor linking the kitchen, dining, living, entry and bedrooms together in one large connected residence.

This home includes a new master suite with gas fireplace, a fully tricked out bunkroom and bathroom just for the kids, a see thru double sided masonry fireplace to both separate and connect the Living Room to the Kitchen and Dining room, a barrel vaulted wood ceiling in the living room and a custom steel, stainless steel cable railing and solid Douglas fir floating tread staircase as the homes sculpture and centerpiece.
